Massive demand for S.F.’s new teacher housing

Shirley Chisholm Village, developed on a former school site on 43rd Avenue between Irving and Judah streets, has sparked a push for more affordable housing geared toward educators and school staff struggling to stay in the city. Frank Lara, vice president of the United Educators of San Francisco, said the demand shows that “the need is great and more should be done faster.”

“There’s a pipeline here. It’s ready to go,” said Nevada Merriman, VP of Policy and Advocacy for MidPen Housing. Since Fall 2023, the City has discussed with Alameda Point Collaborative and MidPen Housing the feasibility of a branch library in the RESHAP (Rebuilding Existing Supportive Housing at Alameda Point) development at Pan Am Way near West Midway Avenue. RESHAP is a housing project that will develop approximately eight acres of City land at Alameda Point into a trauma-informed campus to serve those most in need.

Dream of Housing and Health Care Now a Reality

On May 29, nonprofit MidPen Housing hosted a celebration for Bienestar Plaza Apartments, 57 affordable rentals at 1520 Capitola Road, Live Oak, long awaited and much needed in this community. The apartments are next to a 20,000-square-foot health clinic opened by nonprofit Santa Cruz Community Health and nonprofit Dientes Community Dental Care 11-chair clinic, both of which opened in 2022.

This completes the vision of a partnership by Santa Cruz Community Health and Dientes and MidPen to turn an unused county property into a campus of health and housing in one location, which is rare but may become less rare locally.

MidPen Housing Celebrates Two New Developments

MidPen Housing has recently delivered nearly 200 more affordable homes, with the opening of two new communities in California: Bienestar Plaza in Santa Cruz County, and Gateway Rising in Menlo Park.
